Staying connected and sane during the holidays

What do you say about the holidays?
“Wahoo, they’re here” or “oh no, they’re here already?” Either way they are busy times for families whether you are traveling, hosting family or even gathering with friends. How will you stay connected and sane?
In this busy time, you’re still going to work on your relationship right?
In busy times, you may find yourself letting your “feelings talks” go by the wayside. In these times, you hardly see each other and when you do, you have bottled up emotions they all com tumbling out.
So what do you do to avoid that and have a great holiday?
Let’s come up with a plan that you can live with.
- Keep your 10 minute talk each night. This is so important when things get busy. Remember to check in with each other.
- No assumptions on what they other is doing. Have a clear plan and make sure both feel supported by the other and feel as if you are working as a team.
- Find some time to enjoy yourself! If family is coming, have them watch the kids so you can go on date night. Maybe even grab a group of friends, get your kids watched and go have some couple time.
- Remember to fight fair about families. If “family talk” is always a fight, come up with a plan on how to deal with it better this year. Talk about it afterwards to continue to improve next year.
- Talking about over-drinking or over-eating. If this is a problem for either of you, such as if you fight more when you drink more, then own it and find a way to minimize it and keep the peace.
- Go into the holidays as a team. One person feeling left out and the other feeling overwhelmed will only led to hurt feelings.
- Make sure you surround yourself with enough fun stuff that you can enjoy yourselves. There is no need to overrun yourself.
Easier said than done
You both need to make an effort to stay connected through the holidays. You don’t need to have this be another holiday of fights. Make the change, make a new tradition and make it the best holiday yet!
